There are a lot of things I learnt as an oldie but goodie, but one thing I never thought of was how many funny struggles will be a part of my daily life! As a younger person, I believed that when one grows old, he or she becomes calm, content and lives in peace without any cares. The actual situation has been far different. There’s always something new and different to discover every day, a new obstacle to overcome, a new joke to be told to myself. Sometimes I feel great when I wake up and sometimes when I wake up, I wonder why my back hurts when I did nothing the day before. The aging isn’t a breeze, but it certainly makes for great stories.
Life After Sixty
This morning was like most mornings. I woke up early and stretched before getting out of bed. All at once, I heard a strange cracking sound from somewhere in my body. I first glanced around the room since I believed something was broken. Then I noticed that the sound was coming from my knees. This is when I cracked up. Once, without an ounce of hesitation, I could jump out of bed after years. I need some minutes to get ready to stand up. My body is like a weatherman and gives me a weather forecast every morning, I remark. When knees hurt, you can bet the rain will fall. When my back becomes tight, I know I need some extra coffee in the morning.
Eventually, I got out of bed, and walked to the kitchen where I made breakfast. I put the kettle on and began searching for my glasses. I’ve looked in my table, my counter, even my fridge! After 10 minutes I gazed at myself in the mirror and saw the glasses on my face. Things do happen very often like that. Often a memory slip can be a source of frustration, however it can be funny also. I have learnt to not get agitated about petty things. I laugh, though, and move on with my life. I’ve learned that life is easier when you become a little more self-aware and can laugh at your own mistakes instead of getting mad at yourself.
#1. Forgetting Why I Walked Into a Room
One of the greatest things about being older is that I can forget when I should have come into a room for the purpose of. This occurs nearly daily. I am leaving the living room with a definite intention, going in the bedroom and suddenly I don’t remember what I wanted from the living room. Then I just stand in front of the wall hoping something will just appear. Now on occasion, I go back to the room I start in. That sometimes brings back my memory, amazingly. I’d always thought that this was the case for some, but through speaking with friends of my age, I realized that this is a very common occurrence. We all know how it feels and enjoy sharing stories about lost tasks.

#2. The Challenge of Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
As we grow older, another problem that arises is getting a decent sleep. In the old days I could sleep all night without waking up once. Getting a good night’s sleep is a luxury these days. Sometimes I get up at night to get water. Other nights, I wake up due to discomfort in my shoulder. Sometimes I wake up for no reason at all and stare at the ceiling for an hour! The strange thing is that when I do get the opportunity to take a nap during the day, I can sleep for minutes at a time. I think my body loves to make things hard. But, I have come to know how much good it does to take a break when I can.

#3. Grocery Shopping and Forgotten Essentials
Shopping is also no longer the same. I was going to the supermarket with a short list of items in my shopping cart one afternoon. There were only 5 items on the list so it made me feel good because it wasn’t too many. Somehow, I came home with some snacks, cleaning supplies and several items not on the list. Sadly I had to leave two of the five things I needed behind. I was laughing in my kitchen when I wondered, how did that happen. Many elderly people have similar experiences. We go to the shop with one idea and come back with another! To start off, it can be frustrating but also a reminder to not take ourselves so seriously.

#4. Trying to Keep Up With Technology
Technology poses other issues. Every time I manage to learn the use of a device, an update comes out and ruins it. Either one day I can find a setting, or the next day I can’t. I accidentally open things up that I don’t want to open up sometimes when I hit the wrong button. Technology is a moving target for many older people, but it appears it’s catching up with younger people. I do my best to learn as much as possible, as technology can make life easier. There are times, though, when I want things to remain as they are so I can become comfortable and know them, before something else changes.

#5. Living With Everyday Aches and Pains
Another common symptom of old age is aches and pains in the body. My back becomes stiff after sitting in a chair for too long some days. My knees complain on other days if I walk too far. The weird thing is, sometimes I wake up sore and I’m doing nothing out of the ordinary. I have a funny thing about myself that I can hurt myself while sleeping. These pains can be both frustrating and a reminder that I need to look after myself. I find gentle exercise, stretching and being active helps more than I have been led to believe. I have learned that I need to get up, get active, even when I don’t feel like it. The more I am active, the better I feel both physically and mentally.

#6. A Simple Day of Cleaning Turns Into a Workout
One hilarious moment that occurred is when I decided to clean up the house. I was energetic and motivated, and began to tidy closets and rearrange furniture. So far, it was all going great, until I took a seat for a brief respite. That little break grew into a long sleep, as my body suddenly grew aware of all the work I had done. I felt good at the end of the day, I felt good about what I did, but I needed a little more time to get better. I used to be able to clean for hours and still have the energy to get it done. Now I know that it’s better to take my time than rush through things.

#7. The Wisdom That Comes With Age
All these tribulations be that as it may, there is something about getting older. Learning is the only way to get the lessons of experience. I have grown in my ability to be patient, understanding and to appreciate simple times. I’m not as bothered by little things anymore. If something goes wrong, I remind myself that it’s probably not the end of the world. Life puts things into perspective. Aging can also mean challenges, but also wisdom. That wisdom enables me to deal with such troubles with a less violent spirit than I did in my youth.

#8. Learning to Laugh at Life’s Little Mistakes
Another thing I like about it is that sometimes I can laugh when I least expect it. I try to find humor in things as I lose my glasses, forget a name, or accidentally purchase the wrong item at the store. A good laugh helps alleviate stress and makes rough days smoother. I have formed a lot of my best memories from things that were maddening at the time, but funny later. Looking back, I have learned that it is not all that important to be perfection for happiness. Errors, unexpected turns and minor misfortunes can sometimes make the best moments of your life.

#9. Finding Joy Despite the Challenges of Aging
I know there will be more challenges to come as I continue to age. More missed appointments, lost stuffs, and even more unexpected aches will most likely occur. But there will be more opportunities for learning, growing and appreciating life. Aging isn’t just getting older, it’s adjusting to change with a smile on your face. Each wrinkle, each gray hair, and each funny error is a part of a story. This is a tale of experience, lessons learned and memories made that make life complete. In life, there is a lot to struggle with, but there is also a lot to laugh and to move forward.

#10. Gardening Lessons and Unexpected Struggles
A lesson I have picked up as I got older is that plans don’t always go according to plan. I made up my mind a few weeks ago to get some garden work done on the afternoon. It was a splendid day and I was feeling the thrill of being outdoors. I began to weed and trim plants. It all was fine until I bent down to find it difficult to get up again. I laughed for no real reason, it was only as if the gravity had suddenly become stronger. I got to my feet after several minutes and proceeded to work carefully. These days I take a few things for granted because I’m getting older. Things that were once easy are now more challenging and may need patience, planning, and even some creativity to get done.

#11. Driving Adventures and Memory Lapses
Driving has also become an adventure in unexpected ways. I love the independence of being behind the wheel and driving where ever I need to go. But there are times when I get to a place and find myself wondering why I went there, to begin with. I sit in the parking lot, and wait to remember the reason of my trip. It typically returns to me after a couple of minutes but it always makes me laugh. My brain would sometimes take a day off without my knowledge. I have learned to slow down and take my time, rather than being frustrated. Most things will come back to me eventually and if they don’t then I make a note for next time.

#12. Why Staying Home Feels Better Than Going Out
One amusing thing that changed is how I perceive social events. I used to enjoy all of the events and be out late many years ago. I still like spending time with people these days, but I like the comfort of my own house as well. Sometimes I get invited and for the whole day I’m thrilled about it. As night falls, my couch becomes a lot more appealing. Warm water, cozy clothes, and a serene night. There are lots of people my age who really get this. We love to get together, but we also appreciate a quiet time. It’s not about being less active, it’s about finding out what truly makes us happy to us.

#13. How Aging Changes Eating Habits
The connection to food has evolved over the years, too. As a kid, I didn’t pay attention to food. So I’m more aware, because some foods are clearly trying to remind me of my age. I can stay up all night on one spicy meal! It’s easy to feel as if you’re taking on a larger responsibility than you are when it comes to a large dessert. I love good food and tasty indulgences, however. Here’s the difference, I’ve learned to be moderate. I find myself saying occasionally that my gut now feels better about something than I do. It tells me right away if I make a wrong decision. These changes may be a hassle but they promote healthy habits and healthy choices.

#14. Becoming My Own Weather Forecaster
I am not the same person who was impacted by the weather in the past. I used to think that people were making things up when they claimed they could feel the rain before it happened. Now I get it what they meant. Some joints can seem to predict the weather better than TV weather reports. When my knees begin to hurt, they have to look outside me for any clouds to show up. It’s just an old age phenomenon. We laugh about being human weather stations, and other friends tell similar tales. It may seem like a silly thing to say, but it can be a comfort to know that others have the same experience. Many common experiences occur with age, which comes with sharing. There are many common experiences that happen with age and result in understanding and humor.

#15. The Mystery of the Missing House Keys
One afternoon, I spent a good one hour looking for my keys. I went from room to room, rummaged in my pockets, even lifted up the cushions. In my mind, there was no doubt and my keys were lost. But after all these efforts, I located my keys right where they should be on the key hook near the front door. The funny thing is that I have probably glanced at them several times before but failed to notice them. I was rolling around in laughter. This is something that happens much more often than I’d like it to happen. Indeed, the more desperately I try to find something, the less chances I have of finding it. When I finally calm down, the missing object always turns out to be in the most obvious place.

#16. Why Recovery Takes Longer With Age
Yet another truth about aging is that recovery takes more time than anticipated. Whenever I work hard physically in the afternoon, I usually feel the consequences of this the following day, sometimes even later than that. Some years ago, I could go through the busiest days not bothering with recovery. But now my body reminds me that rest is vital. It took some time for me to accept this and not be frustrated by it, since I wanted to retain my pace from youth. But this understanding helped me to enjoy life better and reduce unnecessary stresses.

#17. Appreciating Small Daily Achievements
Another aspect which surprises me is that one can derive a lot of pleasure from trivial things. Completing any task at home, organizing one’s space or completing a project is very gratifying. These things can seem insignificant but they make one’s life more meaningful. Aging has helped me see the value in minor successes which I used to miss before. Instead of feeling frustrated because of all the things that I am unable to do anymore, I try to appreciate the fact that I am able to achieve many things even now. This change of attitude is very helpful because every day provides an opportunity to get something done.

#18. The Importance of Friendships in Old Age
Friends become especially important with time. Talks with people who know about all the difficulties that a person has can be both comforting and entertaining. One gets the chance to joke about lost glasses, missed appointments and strange pains. While talking to such people one feels less stressed since he or she understands that everyone goes through the same experience. Having a good friend can help a person feel better since the company helps to make the process easier.

#19. Learning to Slow Down and Enjoy Life
Getting older has impacted my perception of time, too. I used to hurry between various activities when I was younger. I had to keep myself busy because there were many things to do. Now I realize how important it is to slow down and spend some time on enjoying morning tranquility or spending time with nature or having a good talk with a friend. We move really fast and it is time to appreciate each moment of our life. Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up anything but being able to give attention to what is important and worth it.

#20. Valuable Life Lessons Learned Through Aging
There is no doubt that I faced some troubles due to the process of aging but all of them have brought me great experience that I could not have otherwise. Each problem, each missed item or funny situation gave me an opportunity to learn something new and important. Despite the fact that aging affects people in many ways, it gives a lot of perspective to our lives. It has made us less concerned with lots of things that we used to be scared of before. We’ve learned that it is impossible to live without problems and the most important thing is how you can cope with them.

Reflecting upon the old age troubles and troubles that I have gone through in my life, I now know that they are much more than that. They are a reminder of how our lives continue to develop and mature with time. Every stage in our lives has problems associated with it. While aging may mean slower pace of doing things, forgetting sometimes and having pains here and there, it also means gaining wisdom, becoming thankful for all that one has and being able to narrate many stories. I have now learned to smile a lot and think less.
