With age come lots of sweet memories, but occasionally, there might be some funny memory lapses. Many families are used to seeing how Grandma finds her glasses, asks the same question again and again, can’t remember someone’s name or opens the fridge and just stands there. Such things seem funny and cute, but at the same time they serve as a reminder that elderly people deserve our care, attention and compassion. This is why I have designed these old age memory comics in such an entertaining way.
Grandma’s Forgetful Moments
The idea arose due to real life experience. I wanted to present all those little memory failures of grandmothers, but in a respectful manner. Every comic had to be cheerful, friendly and warm. The aim of mine was not only to entertain, but also to awaken the consciousness about the problem. While laughing at such small things, one needs to understand that Grandma might feel lost at the moment. A light joke would create awareness regarding the issue, without making it serious.
#1. Opens the fridge but forgets what tasty treasure she came to find
I started my story within a warm house since all those memory lapses usually take place right here. Grandma opens her fridge like she was looking for something important. There is the light of the refrigerator inside, shelves with food products, and grandma with a puzzled look on her face. She remembers she came there for something, but she can’t figure out what it was now. The joke seems familiar to everybody, since such things happen quite often.
#2. Writes a shopping list, then forgets where she placed the list
This experience led to another situation involving shopping. Grandmother tries to be smart and makes a list so as not to miss anything. However, she forgets where she placed the list in spite of the fact that the basket is in her hand and shelves are all around her. This cartoon humorously portrays one of the frequent memory issues in everyday life. Moreover, it emphasizes the fact that elderly people try to help themselves in many cases, but simple assistance is needed.
#3. Searches everywhere for her glasses while they rest on her head
Then I thought about a classical case with glasses. Grandmother searches everywhere: sofa, table, cushions, and around the room. And then comes the truth. Her glasses are located on the top of her head. This cartoon makes everyone laugh since this situation is quite real and funny at the same time. Forgetfulness in this case is rather amusing, yet may cause embarrassment. Of course, the reaction of the family should be smiling instead of anger.
#4. Remembers the face and dog, but forgets the friend’s name
This funny old age story takes place in the park. Grandma meets the elderly woman with a lovely dog. She recognizes the face, smile, and even the dog, yet the name eludes her mind. This is a real-life old age memory problem. Remembering names is quite difficult sometimes for the elderly people since this process brings embarrassment. However, grandmother is not depicted as a careless person. On the contrary, she seems to be a sweet girl who tries to do her best.
#5. Looks for her keys without noticing they are already in her hand
In the next case, Grandma is close to the front door and is getting ready to leave somewhere; however, she starts looking for her keys in the purse and around the door, while the keys are right in her hand. This comic strip is simple, amusing, and really relevant. It shows how attention and memory fail to work simultaneously. Joke is easy, but it carries a valuable message. Families should keep the keys, glasses, medicine, and other necessary things in their places.
#6. Enters the room with one sock and completely forgets her mission
Then, I have transferred the location into the bedroom, where Grandma appears with a certain purpose and goal. She understands why she entered the room, but all of a sudden, she is standing in the middle of the bedroom with one sock and no idea what she needs here. Humor comes from the fact that everyone can find oneself in this kind of situation. The problem becomes more frequent with growing age. Grandma is portrayed holding one sock and looking for a reason to come into the room.
#7. Grandma wonders if she took her medicine or only thought about taking it
One more serious problem is the medicines. Grandma sits at the table with a pill box and asks herself if she had already taken her medicine or just intended to take it. This comic strip seems funny, but its message is really significant. Memory issues connected with medication can bring problems to the elderly patients. Pill box, schedule, or some family reminder will be really helpful.
#8. Tells the same story again, and the family still enjoys every word
The mood gets warmer with this panel where the grandma is seen narrating a story to her relatives. She tells the same story every time but all of them listen to her lovingly. This is one of the funniest quotes that have great meaning because many old people narrate the past stories again and again. This is a funny yet very soft symbol of gardening in the comics. Just as plants take time and patience so do elderly people who should always be treated gently. The colorful scene will remind everyone to be calm with forgetful elders.

In the laundry room, another funny situation occurs. Grandma sees the remote control in the laundry basket. She holds it in surprise because the remote seems to have gone on a trip by itself. This is one of the most funny panels that show us that old people often place things somewhere strange. The fact that Grandma saw the remote in the laundry basket is funny yet instructive. A clean house with everything in its right place will prevent many troubles.
#11. Opens the kitchen drawer for a spoon and turns it into a memory test
The kitchen provides another illustration of a simple memory slip. While trying to take a spoon from the drawer, grandma suddenly forgets what she is trying to do and looks into the drawer with a wooden spoon in her hands as if the drawer gives some sort of test to her. It is amusing to see the solution of the problem lying in one’s hands and demonstrates how minor distractions might make even routine things hard to perform for older people. Simple daily activities are helpful to make seniors feel more comfortable.
#12. Grandma goes to brush her teeth but forgets if she came for toothpaste or pajamas
Another bathroom scene provides a new situation in grandma’s daily life. Entering the bathroom to brush her teeth, she finds herself holding both pajamas and toothpaste and has no idea what she entered the room for in the first place. Such a comic is amusing as well as an example of how mixed routines might get confused. Routines of morning and night get confused sometimes due to tiredness of elderly people. Bathroom setting makes the message bright and light to perceive.
#13. Saves her book page but forgets where she kept the book
In a cozy reading corner, grandma puts a bookmark to mark the page she was reading to be able to go back to it. But later, she cannot find the book she read. Such a comic is amusing since she found a way to save her place but lost the book itself. In addition, this is an example of how important leisure activities such as reading books are for elderly people despite the mistakes they can make.
#14. Gets ready early for an appointment but forgets what the appointment is
In the next scene, the grandmother goes out to the bus stop. She is prepared in advance for an appointment and looks at the time on her watch carefully. She is ready for an appointment – she has an appointment card, a handbag, and a bus stop near her. But suddenly, she does not remember why she is going there. The comic illustrates the problem of how difficult it is to plan activities when memory fails. It indicates that the elderly people might need help of family or written instructions to remind them about appointments.
#15. Threads the needle perfectly but forgets what she planned to repair
In the sewing room, the grandmother proves that she is still talented. She threads the needle perfectly, but she does not remember what exactly she wanted to mend. Around her are spools of thread, pieces of fabric, scissors, and a ripped sock. The comic is important since it does not make the grandmother a helpless old lady. She is competent and talented. She just had a moment of forgetfulness. That is why the humor in this cartoon is decent.

Finally, the pantry introduces another comic related to food. Grandma makes a note for herself not to eat anymore, but then she loses this note and ends up eating cookies. Besides, it shows the reminder must be visible because a note will not do anything.

The writing desk setting provides a much gentler tone. Grandma sits down to write a birthday card for someone. She has pens, envelopes, tea, flowers, and a beautiful card in her hands. Then, she cannot remember whose birthday it is. The situation is quite amusing, yet it feels heartwarming. Grandma may have forgotten the name or date, but her intentions were sincere and full of love.
#18. Goes to buy flowers but gets confused between tulips and tomatoes
Going to the flower market setting is rather joyful. The elderly woman goes there to purchase some fresh flowers. In one hand she carries tulips, while in another hand she has picked up tomatoes and now questions herself about her intentions. It is an amusing and brightly colored setting. It depicts the fact that too much of everything at once can create problems in the mind of an elderly person. The comic presents it in a humorous way, while drawing the audience’s attention to the problem.
#19. Wakes up organized but forgets why she set three alarms
Bedroom with the alarm setting is a quite amusing one. Grandma wakes up beside three alarm clocks. She is organized because she had thought of all the possibilities to remind herself of something. Still, she cannot understand why she had set so many alarms. It is a humorous way to present the fact that too many reminders can lead to confusion as well. The organization should be not complex, but rather simple. One reminder may work better than several alarms.
#20. Grandma walks to the mailbox and forgets if she came for mail or exercise
The mailbox setting is quite a cheerful one. The grandma goes out with great determination. She reaches her destination which is the mailbox, takes the letters in her hands and thinks if she actually went there to get the letters or exercise. It is a humorous setting because no matter what the answer is, both of them are quite helpful. Even when a person forgets the actual purpose of her actions, she can gain something from it.
Overall, these comics do not only serve the purpose of entertainment but create awareness about the memory issues that old age can cause.
