A Funny Story About Old Age, Knee Pain, and Daily Life Awareness For Grandmother

knee pain

Old age brings many beautiful memories, but it also brings small daily struggles that many people do not notice. One of the most common problems many grandmothers have is knee pain, which can occur while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, getting out of bed, and more. To represent this issue not in a sad way, but in a humorous one, I decided to create a series of grandma knee pain problem comics. Moreover, the goal of these knee pain comics is not just to make people laugh, but also to raise their awareness about problems that many elderly ladies have to deal with.

Grandma Knee Problems

One day, I just got a single idea. I want to create some comics about knee pain that would be interesting, enjoyable, likable and shareable by older women. Although people tend to make jokes about old age, behind them there are usually health issues. Knee pain is one of them. Yes, a grandma may laugh and say “My knees are making noise again,” but in reality she may be suffering from pain, stiffness, and weakness. That is why I decided to create all these comics.

#1. Knees turn every staircase into a mountain adventure

In the first comic, I showed grandma looking at stairs like they were a mountain. Because many elderly people do precisely the same. While several stairs are not a problem for young people, for an older lady with knee pain it means a real problem. Of course, it is very amusing to look at such pictures, but it also helps to raise awareness about the issue. When you see an elderly lady trying to climb some stairs, you shouldn’t run, but you need to help her and hold her hand.

#2. Grandma’s knees crack before the jokes even begin

Next, I made a knee pain comic where the cracking sound of grandma’s knees starts even before the jokes start. The joke is interesting in that many older people experience a cracking sound when they stand up or sit down. In the joke, the sound of the knee is personified. However, it is essential to remember what it means to have cracks without any knee pain, swelling, or difficulties in walking. Using humor, the knee pain comic reminds relatives to ask an elderly woman how she feels apart from cracking jokes about it.

#3. Grandma knows rain is coming because her knees report it first

The next comic is about grandma who says that she does not need a weather application because her knees tell her that rain is approaching. Many older people believe that their joints signal weather changes. It can be stiffness, heaviness, or pain. They always relate it to cold and rainy weather. The comic is interesting in that grandma becomes her personal forecast of weather changes. At the same time, it shows sensitivity of old knees. Relatives should remember that weather changes can make it more difficult to walk for elderly ladies. A warm room and soft clothes will help them.

#4. Sits down and her knees vote to stay there

Finally, I made a knee pain comic where grandma sits down and her knees ask if they should stay there. It is a very simple scene but realistic as well. Elderly ladies experience relief after sitting, and standing becomes very challenging for them. The joke is funny in that knees seem to make their decisions whether to stay or not to stay there. People should understand why grandma does not want to get up immediately. Do not insist on movement too much.

#5. Walks slowly because her knees always need extra time

In another comic, grandma’s knees work in just two ways which are slow and wait a minute. This comic was quite amusing and showed me a way how old people move in a humorous manner. Actually, most grandmothers are not lazy, they are careful. It is likely that their knees hurt, ache or are stiff, thus they can not move fast. This knee pain comic is about patience. When elderly woman moves slowly, you should not move ahead of her. Instead, you can tell her to take her time. Just small change in what you say can help older people feel respect and love.

#6. Bends down only after her knees approve the plan

The next comic was about grandmother’s difficulties when bending down. She used to bend easily, but now she should negotiate with her knees first. It is actually a common problem for many elderly women. Bending down to pick something from the floor, put on shoes or open some low drawers may cause pain to knees. The funny side is that grandma talks to her knees as if they were strict bosses. The serious side of this knee pain comic is that houses should be adjusted for elderly people, things they use daily should not be placed very low.

#7. Knees make more noise than her morning alarm

Finally, I came up with a comic in which grandmother’s knees make more noise than her alarm clock. In this case, an older woman gets out of her bed in the morning while holding her knee. Morning stiffness is quite common for old people. After long hours of sleep, their knees can be stiff or hard to move. This comic brings humor into morning routine of an older woman, but at the same time it can remind us that mornings are difficult period for elderly ladies. They need more time before being able to walk normally.

#8. Knee pop is so loud even the chair gets shocked

In one of my comics, grandma’s knee makes so much noise that the chair is shocked as well. I considered this one as funny because it provides the chair with some character. The reaction of the chair seems to be a reaction of another character in the situation. This knee pain comic is eye-catching and amusing, but it also demonstrates the frequency of knee popping in old age. In other words, the message behind this comic is that you should listen to your grandparents when they complain about the noise made by their knees and not take it lightly. Grandparents may say it jokingly, but it does not mean that they do not need any help.

#9. Grandma makes a grand entrance because her knees refuse to rush

The comic with grandma who makes her grand entry because her knees do not allow her to run also shows an interesting situation. Slow walking becomes a stylish one. My main task was to show slow walking of grandmas without making them look helpless and vulnerable. The thing is that I had to create comics which would be respectful towards older ladies, but at the same time entertaining. Old people have to be shown respect because of their experience and wisdom. However, elderly ladies are still humorous and strong characters.

#10. Holds the wall because her knees need backup support

Finally, I have created the comic which shows grandma hanging on the wall because her knees need help. It happens to most grandmothers at home. The elderly lady might lean on the wall, on the chair, on the table or on the door frame. It may seem that grandma is cautious, but it might also mean that there are problems with her knees or that she has fears of falling. The joke in the comic makes the wall a helpful character, but the main message of it is the following. It is necessary for the house to have enough space, good light and no obstacles for walking.

#11. Knees need a full meeting before any surprise move

One such comic featured grandma’s knees having a full meeting before she could do anything unexpected. Grandma was trying to get up from the sofa, but her knees could not allow her to do this suddenly. This cartoon is funny since it compares the grandma’s joints to some office worker that requires prior planning to take actions. However, this awareness is quite real. Sudden movements may be painful and cause some difficulties for elderly women. Quick standing is not always safe.

#12. Negotiates with every stair before climbing

Another cartoon featured grandma bargaining with each step prior to climbing. Here I have used my own staircase once more, but this time in a different scenario with another old lady. Going up and down stairs is probably one of the biggest challenges when it comes to painful knees. Going upstairs can be painful while going downstairs can be even more difficult. The joke is funny because it shows how many steps the process can require. However, there is an important underlying message here. Elderly ladies may require railing, some kind of support and patience when climbing the stairs. Family members should never rush grandma while climbing the stairs. Safe home arrangement can significantly reduce stress for grandma.

#13. Grandma bends down and her knees question the whole mission

One comic featured grandma bending next to a low drawer while knees questioned someone approving of the mission. It is made to demonstrate a rather simple everyday scene in an elderly woman’s house. Low drawers, dropped objects, or low shelves can be challenging for people with knee problems. It is funny since it makes bending look like some sort of secret mission. Awareness is that simple movements can be difficult for elderly women. One can help in a number of ways, including keeping all the necessary objects in reach, installing accessible storage and providing assistance respectfully.

#14. Morning stretch is delayed by knee complaints

Later on, I created a comic of grandma’s morning stretch. Grandma was doing her morning stretch beside her bed, but complaining about her knee pain took her much more time than the stretch itself. This comic is a reminder that senior health is not only related to pain; it also includes routines of everyday life. Many elderly people are trying to stay physically active despite stiffness. Funny quotes are making the situation light and more understandable. However, elderly people need to stick to a doctor-approved physical activity plan.

#15. Stands too fast and her knees send her back down

Grandma is standing too fast and her knees force her to think twice and get a second opinion in the next comic. It is a funny idea of knees being strict and responsible for all decisions. The situation takes place nearby the chair, which many elderly women use to get support. Standing up too quickly might become a painful process, especially for stiff knees. The main lesson here is simple: do not hurry grandma when she stands up from her seat. Make sure there is a good chair, some space to stand up and balance oneself properly. This way the comics remind younger people that standing up is not a trivial matter for elderly women.

#16. Knees announce every step before she reaches the room

In another comic, grandma was walking through the hallway and her knees were shouting out loud every single step. It is a funny idea of turning every step into an open announcement. Many people suffering from knees pains experience or hear any noise while walking. Also, they may move slowly due to their fear that their knees would hurt after that. The main awareness point here is that walking through the house is also a routine. Hallways seem to be trivial, but for seniors who have knee pains . Thus, families should take care of the floor at home and remove any rug or obstacles for grandmother.

#17. Grandma is ready to go out, but her knees are still deciding

After that, I developed a doorway comic where grandma is ready to leave, however, her knees cannot make up their mind yet. In this case, grandma wants to go out, but her knees cannot cope with the desire yet. Many elderly women like to visit relatives, attend events and go on walks. However, knee pain can prevent them from doing that. The comic helps raise the awareness of the emotional side of the issue. It is important to know that knee pain does not influence people physically only. Moreover, it prevents elderly people from enjoying their lives. That is why we should assist elderly people leaving safely instead of allowing them being confined due to the pain.

#18. Walks slowly so her knees complain quietly

In another comic, grandma holds a cane in her hands and walks slowly enough to make her knees complain quietly. This cartoon is soft and fun because there is a kind of negotiation between grandma and her knees. It also shows that holding a cane can be quite acceptable since many elderly people do not want to use the aid because of shyness. Support tools such as a cane or walker will allow moving around in a safe manner. Walking slowly is still walking. Sometimes, independence of an elderly woman does not necessarily mean walking fast without any support.

#19. Treats every low seat like a warning sign for her knees

In another cartoon, grandma sits on a low chair marked with a warning label concerning her knees. It is a relatable topic since it is difficult for elderly people to sit in low chairs. Sitting down is not difficult, however, getting up from low seats is challenging and exhausting for elderly women. The joke makes the chair seem dangerous in some way. The awareness in this case is practical. Elderly women may need chairs which have appropriate height, arms and reliable support. Low and soft chairs may seem comfortable but they can lead to difficulties with standing up.

#20. Still loves dancing, but her knees prefer the slow version

In the final comic, the grandma dances in her heart while her knees prefer the slow version. I ended the comic series on a happy note. While knees may slow down an individual, it must never take away her/her personality, music, and happiness. Though the grandma may no longer be able to dance the same way, she can have her own way of enjoying her life. This comic is humorous, sweet, and uplifting. It reminds elderly ladies that despite the knee problems they are as lively as ever. The comic also teaches the whole family to appreciate the lively spirit of the grandmother rather than her disabilities alone.

image-60-1024x1024 A Funny Story About Old Age, Knee Pain, and Daily Life Awareness For Grandmother

Overall, the grandma knee pain problems comics are more than just humor pieces. They are mini-tales of aging, patience, love, and care from family members. Each knee pain comic contains a different old woman, knee pain problems scenario, and humorous quote. All these make up a comprehensive message that aging is funny and deserves respect. While enjoying these jokes about knee pain, people should not forget to assist the actual grandmothers among them. Ask them whether their knees are okay. Accompany them on stairs. Assist them to stand. Walk slowly with them. A bit of kindness could go a long way in making aging easier. For more, click here, here and here.
