My name is Elsie and I am an older woman, who lives in the north of England, in York. I have been living here for some years now. I know the sound of buses, I know the wet shine of wet pavements after the rain, I know the silence of the morn that’s close to the shops, I know the cozy feel of a hot cup of tea when the wind blows in off the street. As I’ve gotten older I have found that life is not less funny. It simply gets funny in another manner.
Honest Old Age Comics
If you look, then you will see older women all around in my city. We are in a garden center, at the library, on the bus, at bingo, in a park, and at times walking very slowly with shopping bags, with a very big sense of pride. We might go a tad slower, but our minds are still full of tales. On some days, we laugh at ourselves and say, “It’s easier to laugh than to complain all day.”
All these old age comics remind me of real girls I know! Every picture is a different lady, a different place and a different joke. The jokes are harmless, humorous and understandable. They demonstrate that there is so much color, humor, courage and some cheeky behavior in the ageing process. In this series, here are the pictures and what they remind me of.
#1. Classic & Chaotic: When Your Knees Become Your Weather App
Classic & Chaotic is a confident walking senior woman. Her joke is that her knees are her alarm clock and metron. Laughed at this as many of us in the UK know when it’s going to rain before the forecast does. In York, the joints may grumble in the early mornings, due to damp weather. This comic is fun because it helps to make aches a joke and not a problem.

#2. Golden Sass: The Nap Queen’s Guide to Retirement
In Golden Sass, a lady is seen in a relaxed smile with a cup of tea, enjoying her retirement years. For her, retirement is good because she can do nothing all day and needs a nap. This is a very accurate statement. People believe that when they retire they will have plenty of free time, but rest is also needed. It’s easy to make a short walk to the post office feel like an event in an urban environment.

#3. Still Got It: A Memory Joke That Wanders Off in Style
Still Got It is a memory game. The lady says that her memory is good, but it keeps going off on a tangent. There are many senior citizens who are familiar with this feeling. You take the stairs up and then you don’t remember what you were there for. You place your glasses on the table, and then after 10 minutes, find them. This comic is a gentle comic as it is not laughing at us but laughing with us.

#4. Aged to Perfection: Garden Humor for the Gracefully Sore
In Aged to Perfection, a happy gardener is displayed. Multi-tasking involves taking a cup of tea and holding a glass. Growing a garden in the UK is far from a Hobby. It’s like a way of life. Flowers are comforting whether in a small city garden or a few pots by the back door. However, with ageing, many things start to become a mark of pride to be able to do.

#5. Too Glam to Give a Damn: Secrets, Sass, and Senior Style
Too Glam to Give a Damn has a cool older lady with big glasses, bold clothes and a lot of confidence. She assures me that her secrets are secure, for she’s forgotten them. This picture brings to my mind that older women can not be silent, or invisible. We can still wear lipstick, make the people smile, enjoy fashion and dress up.

#6. Young at Heart: Fitness Class Victory, Floor Edition
Young at Heart is about fitness class. She did a fitness class only to let people know that she still CAN get up off the floor! This is very real. It’s good to get active, but it is often the most difficult thing to get back up to doing. Gentle classes are available for older people at community centers in many cities in the UK. The funniest thing is when someone has their knee click out louder than the music.

#7. Seasoned & Sparkly: Baking Twice, Laughing Once
In Seasoned & Sparkly, a baker is seen in a cozy kitchen. She declares that she baked something twice, saying, ‘I forgot I baked it once. This is a hug of fun and a warm hug. Numerous older women are cooking for years in the family. Baking evokes memories of children and neighbors, church fairs and rainy afternoons. A whole life can be lived in a kitchen.

#8. Beach Please: Senior Relaxation Done Right
In Beach Please, a beach is displayed with a relaxed lady in the foreground. She states she doesn’t need to have big beach plans because that’s sufficient to find a chair and not move. This strikes me as a reference to seaside trips in the UK. The air is fresh by the sea whether it’s Scarborough, Brighton, Blackpool or Whitby. However, a good seat becomes more valuable to a person than a long time walk on the sand beyond a certain age.

#9. Wise & Wild: Chasing Dreams After Stretching First
In Wise & Wild, an artist is depicted with paint and bright colours. She says she still pursues her dreams but she stretches first, as her joke would have it. This is a nice message. Creativity doesn’t end with age. Older women begin painting, writing, sewing and learning music later in their lives. We have dreams yet we know the importance of comfortable shoes and a warm up.

#10. Cozy & Confident: Creak, Caffeinate, Repeat
Cozy & Confident features a knitter with a cup of java. She doesn’t get up and down, she gets up and caffeinate/her face is grim, This is one of my favorites. The kettle is all too frequently the first friend in the city morning in the UK. Some of us require tea, some coffee and most of us require a few minutes before the bones agree to the movement.

#11. Lucky & Loud: Bingo Night Before Bedtime
Lucky & Loud is about bingo night. The lady claims that a wild night out is still her favorite thing to do, provided that the bingo game doesn’t go beyond 9 o’clock. The bingo hall, church hall and social club are all traditional venues for older people to socialize with friends. It’s not all about the prize. It’s about a camaraderie, a routine, laughter, and arriving home before it gets too late and too cold.

#12. Road Trip Queen: Senior Spontaneity with Snack Breaks
The image depicts a woman standing next to a camper van, reminiscent of a road trip. Here’s her joke: “Spontaneity is changing lanes without first having to stop for a snack. This photograph looks like it has an adventurous feeling. Older women still travel in the past. We have more tissues, water, mints and emergency biscuits but we still like to explore new places. Road trips are fun for all ages.

#13. Blooming Brilliant: Gardening, Back Pain, and Big Laughs
Another gardener, in a wheelbarrow and with herbs, is shown in Blooming Brilliant. In an agreement with her, her back gardens and it complains. It’s like gardening after sixty or seventy. You love the flowers, and then your back tells you what it’s done. However, it’s worth the garden.

#14. Morning Mischief: Extra Crispy Confidence for Breakfast
In Morning Mischief, it’s a lady who is preparing breakfast like a pro. She claims there will be no more burning breakfasts, and that it’s now extra crispy confidence! This comic is a story about attitude. When we get old we stop fretting about little things. Don’t get too upset if toast burns. If the pancake is not right, it’s still okay if you add enough jam.

#15. Booked & Blessed: Building an Emergency Escape Plan
The book shop is a cozy place where the Booked & Blessed series takes place. The lady claims that she is not storing up books, but creating an emergency escape plan, chapter by chapter. Older women enjoy reading books as books are silent companions. Reading is a quiet way to escape the sound, weather and anxieties of a city like York, where there are bookshops and libraries.

#16. Mic Drop Granny: Karaoke Knees and Senior Swagger
Mic Drop Granny features a lady singing Karaoke. Her voice has grown so much and so sweet, unlike her knees in the chorus. This comic has a lot of energy. Music is a preferred activity of older persons. Young songs make for quicker recollection than photographs. Although dancing may be slower these days, it has a kick in it.

#17. Stitched with Sass: Thread, Patience, and Muttering
The image of Stitched with Sass displays a woman at work, sewing. She claims she can mend anything with a bit of thread, patience and muttering. This brings to mind many women of my generation. How to sew, sew buttons and patch clothing. This is a skill that has come in handy again in today’s world. When you fix something, it can seem like you’re bigger than life.

#18. Hooked on Happiness: Fishing for Laughs and Forgetting Why
In Hooked on Happiness, a woman is shown fishing by a lake that is in the background. She states that fishing keeps her young because she forgets all the time why she went out there in the boat. Fishing is relaxed, slow and patient. It is appropriate for an older age. Even when there’s no fish, the rest of the day may be made complete by the quiet waters, the fresh air and little dog nearby.

#19. Reel Relaxed: The Best Movie Night Plot Twist
Reel Relaxed presents at home movie night. The lady tells us her favorite twist is when people don’t ask her to get up for anything. This is particularly the case in the evening. At the end of a long day, the best seat is the one that has a blanket, the remote and no one needing assistance in locating something in another room!

#20. Peak Sass: Mountain Climbing with a Bench Clause
Peak Sass features a very alert and mature hiker in a trek on a mountain trail. She claims that she still goes climbing on mountains – if there’s a bench at the top. This comic is not only funny, but it’s inspiring as well. Hills, nature, parks and fresh air are all available to older people. We plan better, that’s all. With a bench, a flask and a good view, anything can be a victory.

All these comics seem to depict old age in fun and colorful manner. They don’t say getting older is always easy. Aches and pains in the knees, complaints in the back, short-term memory declines, and naps are important. But they also demonstrate that older women have humor, style, hobbies, friendships and courage.
Living in an old age can be sometimes silent in a city in the UK, particularly during gloomy days, when people hurry by. But, these images bring to mind that there is a good story in each of these older women. She could be a gardener, a singer, a baker, a reader, a traveler, a knitter or a bingo champion. She may be slow, but she still has a lot of fire in her.
What I’ve got to say is easy to understand. Don’t be afraid of getting older. Joke at the little tribulations. Put on the brightly colored cardigan. Drink the tea. Sit on the bench. Take the nap. Tell the joke. Many years gone by don’t mean a life of nothing. It’s filled with little moments and sometimes little moments are the best comics. You can enjoy more by visiting here and here.
